Unschooling and research on learning to read: an invitation
from: Alan Thomas and Harriet Pattison
Between us we have been researching unschooling/autonomous education for the last 16 years. So far, based on more than 120 families, the focus has been on general aspects of unschooling. At the same time we have learned quite a bit about the process of learning to read. As you might expect, much of what we have found challenges the methods commonly used in school as well as expectations that children not reading by the age of 7 have a "problem".
We are now obtaining a more comprehensive picture of how children learn to read at home. So far, we have had well over 200 responses from all over the world. If you are interested and would like to contribute your own
experiences and insights, we would be very interested to hear from you. We have posted a short questionnaire on our website where you can also read a summary of our previous research.
