Children learn much more from what they see us do than from what we tell them. Instead of telling your child to say ‘Thank You’ and ‘Please’ it’s easier to be polite to them; that way they’ll become polite naturally. To motivate your child to read and learn it also works best to give a good example. If children see adults read and learn they’ll pick up on it naturally. We also try to give a good example when it comes to realizing our dreams and staying true to our believes and morals. You can tell a child that he can do anything he’ll set his mind to, but those are only words. If you try to become your best self and pursue your dreams you give them proof that anything is possible. In one of the earlier episodes I’ve told you that my husband realized he wanted to be a musician when he was forty and in the past months we’ve been trying to make this dream of his a reality. We sold our farm in the USA and moved back to Europe. We’re living in a cottage in Ireland now so my husband could get out of the ‘fast lane’ and is doing what he likes to do best; making music. It took a lot of courage to give up everything we had and go for it, but we wanted to show our children that change is good and that we’ll always come out on top. Together with our children we made a list of the things that we value most in life and we found all those things back here in Ireland. The things we had to let go off were mostly material and, although it isn’t always easy, we can do without. What we value most is to live surrounded by nature and to have animals to take care off. Our new home is bordered by a forest and a stream and it came with a resident pony and cats! We traveled through Europe in the past few months and we saw and learned many new things. The children played ‘cavemen’ after visiting prehistoric sites and became knights after visiting castles. They learned new languages and tasted new foods. They made new friends and rekindled old friendships. The most important thing they’ve learned though, is that they can be happy anywhere in the world and that they don’t have to be afraid of changes. They’ve learned that the whole wide world belongs to them and that anything is possible. We didn’t just tell them; we showed them.
